ONLY BEGOTTEN SON!__Dr. Frederick France (Apostle of Diversity)

The scripture which almost every believer quotes to explain Jesus’ mission on earth is found in John 3:16, which says “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”.

Most Bible readers picture the phrase “only begotten Son” in the light of procreation or creation, hence non-Christians argue that this cannot be possible since God has no wife. Of course that argument is baseless because God is not a man. There is no impossibility with Him! God can give birth without a wife. What should rather attract our intelligent scrutiny in that scriptural phrase is the word “only” which qualifies the “begotten Son”. That word is questionable because Adam, the first human being created on earth (without the involvement of a woman) is also known in Scriptures as the son of God. See the final part of Lk 3:38. “…Adam, which was the son of God”. Job 1:6 also refers to the angels of heaven as sons of God:“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them” .Obviously, if Jesus was created like Adam or the angels, then the word ‘ONLY’ which is used to qualify His ‘sonship’ would be wrong or misplaced, because He would not be the ‘only’ Son of God.

The word “only” which also signifies uniqueness, indicates that the ‘Son-label’ on Jesus, points to a ‘type’ which is not comparable to the created sons (spirits or humans).Jesus (God’s Word) is the only ‘Son of God’ who was not created, but on the contrary, created all things. Jn 1:1-3 &14 says “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men… And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the ONLY BEGOTTEN of the Father)…”So, the only begotten Son is not a created son of God, but a ‘WORD EXPRESSED Son of God’.

God’s Word also means God’s Expression or better still God’s Wisdom! This explains why Jesus (the only begotten Son) is also known as the “Wisdom of God” (1 Cor 1:24). Referring to Jesus (God’s Word) as God’s only ‘begotten Son’ is another way of saying, Jesus is God’s ‘unique begotten wisdom’ that made creation possible. Pro 8:12, 22-25 confirms this. It says: “I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions…The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was BROUGHT FORTH; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth”. This scripture expressly explains that, God’s Word which created all things (Jn 1:1-3), is the same as God’s wisdom which created all things(Psa 104:24). It also goes to mean that the “only begotten Son” is not a created son (like Adam or the angels) but a ‘mystery Son’. He is God’s ‘brain child’! He is God’s innovation! He is God’s ordination! He is God’s Wisdom ‘brought forth’ before creation became possible. 1 Cor 2:7-8says: “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained BEFORE the world unto our glory. Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory”.

God who sees the end from the beginning, knew satan will strike after creation, so He hatched the “Son of God” wisdom to handle Him when he does strike. The “only begotten Son” is therefore, the wisdom of: God (the Lord of glory) Himself, being born as a Son on earth to defeat satan and save mankind (Isa 9:6; Heb 2:14-16). The ‘Son of God’ label on Jesus, points more to wisdom (divine insight or idea) than to a created being like Adam or the angels. Without God hatching the wisdom of Jesus being born into this world to destroy the devil’s works(1 Jn 3:8), there would have been no need for God to create the world because His creation will eventually be destroyed by satan. God (who knows everything) knew satan will make man sin, even before creating us, but His ‘secret card’ was the “only begotten Son wisdom”. The wisdom of God reflecting His ‘express image’ into this world as a model Son, to save His sons from the trap of sin.

Hear what Col 1:15-18 says about Jesus: “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell”. It pleased God to be a practical partaker of His creation. It is just like a script writer acting a role in his own film.

You will agree with me that wisdom precedes every good thing in life; and of course that is why God said “Wisdom is the PRINCIPAL thing; therefore get wisdom…” – Pro 4:7.  A man’s wisdom is what makes him relevant if not influential in life (Eccl 8:1). The “only begotten Son” is the ‘only begotten wisdom’ which made God relevant and influential (powerful). 1 Cor 1:24 says “But unto them which are called, …Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God”. Power and wisdom are the main attributes of God. If Jesus is the “Power and wisdom of God”, then Jesus is the substance which makes God GOD! Without Jesus, God is empty. Jesus is the “only begotten wisdom of God” which enabled Him to become the first to rise from the dead (Col 1:18, Rev 1:17-18; Isa 44:6). The “only begotten Son” wisdom, is the hidden wisdom which made God the only true God (1 Jn 5:20). God the creator practically  experienced His creation, via this wisdom
