“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” – Genesis 2:17.

How ridiculous it sounds for anybody to imagine or assume that the above instruction which forbids Adam and Eve from eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, was actually meant to restrict them from having sex. Genesis 1:28 says “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it”. I need not mention that our God is not an author of confusion! How could He have blessed them to be fruitful, multiply and replenish the earth in chapter one and restrict them from having sex in chapter two?

Unreasonable as it sounds, the basis of argument by those who claim the eaten of the forbidden fruit by Adam and Eve was sexual intercourse, is that, the couple sought to cover their nakedness after eating the fruit. According to them, the tool with which a person commits a crime or an offence is what he seeks to hide. Unfortunately, a lot of naïve believers are buying into this distorted logic. Others have however decided to just accept the forbidden fruit as some sort of apple or physical fruit to free their minds from ‘unnecessary’ spiritual exertion. All manner of misleading teachings and interpretations keep circulating the body of Christ about this subject and in other to play safe, most believers would rather be quiet about the topic or avoid it completely when it comes into light for discussion. Jesus said it is given unto us (believers) to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven (Matt 13:10-11), hence we cannot afford to avoid this subject.

Let us take a meditative look at Genesis 3:10. “And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself”. Obviously, the nakedness mentioned in this scripture is not physical but spiritual nakedness. Physical nakedness relates with the feeling of shame and not of fear. The fact that after eaten the fruit, Adam and Eve became afraid instead of ashamed shows that the nakedness they found themselves in had more to do with their consciousness of lack of protection than exposed private parts. In any case, the whole garden was their bedroom; there was no human in view. Even Genesis 2:25 has earlier stated: “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed”.

What is worth noting is that the above scripture called Adam and Eve man and wife, even before they ate the fruit. Meaning, their marriage was consummated. Eve was no longer a virgin.  1 Corinthians 7:34 says “There is difference also between a wife and a virgin”. Of course, the difference between a virgin and a wife is sex! In other words, if the Scripture called Eve a wife, it means she had had sex. It means the very day God told them to cleave (Gen 2:24), they actually “cleaved”! To cleave is another scriptural phrase for sexual intercourse. Compare the following scriptures: (1) “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” – Genesis 2:24. (2) “What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh”. Sex is the business of a harlot; and the words “cleave” and “joined” have the same meaning. If “joined to an harlot” means have sex with a harlot; then “cleave unto his wife” also means have sex with his wife. That is why both activities ended with the phrase: “one flesh”. Beloved, Adam and Eve had sex the very first day God brought them together and not on the day they ate the fruit.

If the eating of the forbidden fruit was not about sex, then what is it? It is important we understand that (1)a tree which can make a man die spiritually (Gen 2:17); and (2) a tree which can make a man live forever(Gen 3:22),can be anything but physical trees! If they are spiritual trees, then the only way to know what they are is to search for them in Scriptures. Proverbs 18:21 gives us a clue. It says “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” Meaning, the tongue is a type of a spiritual tree which produces fruits of death and life. This tallies perfectly with the trees introduced in the Garden of Eden. The fruit on “The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” kills. The fruit on “The Tree of Life” gives life. Proverbs 15:4 throws a better light on this. It says “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit”. –  A wholesome tongue gives life; a perverse tongue kills the spirit! This is a perfect picture of the two trees in the midst of the Garden of Eden. Those trees were nothing but tongues. The Tree of Life was the Tongue of Life; The Tree of Death was the tongue of death. You can also call them the tongue of God and the tongue of satan. The word of instruction which God spoke to Adam in the garden is the fruit of life. The lie which satan spoke to Eve in the garden was the forbidden fruit.  When Eve swallowed the lie of the devil, they ate the forbidden fruit. That is what the forbidden fruit is all about.

The original Garden of Eden was more spiritual than physical. The garden in which God can walk, cannot be anything less than spiritual. Its location was in the mind realm of man. You can call it the soul realm or the consciousness realm. That was where both God and satan could communicate with man. That was where the real Adam lived. Remember, the real ‘you’ lives in your mind: “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…” – Pro 23:7. The mind of man forms the operational field of his life. All of man’s battles are fought in the mind realm.  2 Corinthians 3:5 says “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh… Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ”. Imaginations, knowledge and thought are all mind products. Those are the things we fight to defeat.  So when God told them about the two trees, what He meant was: “In your minds are two voices speaking; one can kill you spiritually and the other can give you eternal life.  Identify these voices and follow the right one. Unfortunately, they followed the voice of the serpent, and that ended their relationship with God in the Garden of Eden. God shut His door in their spirit, and their mind (soul) was left in darkness. The forbidden fruit is therefore nothing but the voice of satan! Please do not allow anybody to derail you with distorted assumptions! The forbidden fruit is neither sex nor apple. It is the voice of satan!
