When trivialities are given undue attention in a system, they magnify to become giants to torment the very system.Wearing or not wearing of trousers by females for instance, is an insignificant issue which has been erroneously blown out of proportion and given an undue attention by certain sect of Christians; hence it has become a ‘monster’ which is bringing division in the body of Christ.

The genesis of this error is traceable to the wrong interpretation of the scripture in Deuteronomy 22:5 which says “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God”.

Before I attempt to delve into any sought of explanation, I will like to first and foremost ask the following few questions: (1) who designed trousers? Is it God? Of course the answer is NO! It is not God but man. (2) Is it written anywhere in the Scriptures that cloth makers should design ‘trousers’ for men alone and not for women? Of course it is not written. (3) Did people in the Biblical days wear trousers? Of course they did not because there was nothing like trousers in those days.

In the days of our Lord Jesus Christ, men wore coats, robes: “And the soldiers…put on him a purple robe…Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also hiscoat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout” – John 19:2, 23. Robe may qualify for a gown in our days.

GOD IS THE FIRST FASHION DESIGNER

Our God was the first to design garments on earth; and what He designed was unisex garment: “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them” – Gen 3:21. God designed the same type of garment for both males and females. What was the name of the garment?Coats!If we replace ‘coats’ with ‘trousers’in that scripture, it will read: “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make trousers of skin, and clothed them”. What am I driving at? That,God initiated unisex wears. God permits men and women to wear same type of garments. The designs may differ but same type. We have several other evidences in the Bible which point to the fact that men and women wore same type of garments.  In Lamentation 1:9 the Scriptures say: “Her filthiness is in her skirts…” This refers to a female wearing skirt. But then, Prophet Samuel (a male) wore skirts (1 Samuel 15:27). King Saul (a male) wore skirts (1 Samuel 24:4-5). Aaron (a male) wore skirts (Psalm 133:2). How many men wear skirts now-a-days? If men and women wore skirts in the biblical days, how come we have left skirts for women? How come we have a problem accepting that women could equally wear trousers in our days? Is it another form of male chauvinism?

TROUSERS IS MORE APPROPRIATE FOR WOMEN

Wearing of trousers has no spiritual connotation. It is only a wise design of garment which beautifully protects the legs from harsh weather, scratches, mosquito bites et cetera; and I believe it is even more appropriate for women than men because of the delicateness of the female skin. Mind you they are the weaker vessels. “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered” – 1 Pet 3:7.

Trousers are best for women because in the advent of say, a fall or heavy breeze, women will not have the unfortunate situation of exposing their nakedness in public. Moreover, it is easier for a woman to be raped in skirt than in trousers.‘Trousers’ is therefore a garment that ‘honours’ women.

IT IS A SPIRITUAL LANGUAGE

So, what does Deuteronomy 22:5 (which says “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do soare abomination unto the LORD thy God”) mean? Spiritually speaking, wearing of garment means behavior, attitude and motive. That is why the Bible has statements like garment of praise (Isa 61:3):It means having the attitude of praise. Christians are also admonished to put on Christ:“But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, tofulfil the lusts thereof” It means Christians are expected to behave like Christ, by walking in the spirit always and not allowing fleshy behaviours or motives to dominate our lives.

Let us consider 1 Peter 3:4-5 which says: “Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of…putting on of apparel; …For after this manner in the old-time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands.” This talks more about behavior or attitude. So, a male not wearing a female’s garment and vice versa refers to gay and lesbian practices (not literally wearing of clothes).These are abominations which infuriate God.However if a woman’s motive of wearing trousers is to display her naked shapes to seduce men as many ladies do around town these days, then that is really bad news. Remember: God weighs actions (1Samuel 2:3). Wearing dresses which expose upper parts of breasts, nipples, upper part of thighs, buttocks angles et cetera, portrays a lady as a prostitute who is looking for sex customers. When a Christian lady is called ‘sexy’ because of what she is wearing, she should feel sad because that accolade should be for someone who is looking for sex customers! However, if a lady wears trousers with the aim of covering herself beautifully and decently, there is no qualm about that. Beloved, females not wearing trousers is not part of Christian doctrine so do not make it one.
